Depends upon the profession and field. I'm an engineer and worked in the oil industry for 6 years and had to wear a tie for the sake of appearance(engineers were considered management). Back now in the semiconductor industry it is polo shirts and khakis/jeans. I do the same work (maybe even more important work) but I could not relate well to the people I work with now if I wore a tie everyday.

I sure would be hard to take a client out to lunch on a bike. If you were taking them out to lunch I would say it would be unprofessional to have to ask them to drive to lunch because you had your bike. We could play around with a bunch of situations where we argue it was unprofessional (having to wait for you to change vs. getting right down to business).

So what is your profession and was your friend actually your boss??? If he is your boss then what he says may have more significance than if it was a peer. He just may be jealous that his wife won't let him have a bike!
